ROLE OF PROPHYLACTIC SCORTAL DRAIN IN PREVENTION OF HEMATOMA AFTER REPAIR OF HUGE INGUINAL HERNIA

Abstract

Surgical repair of large inguinal hernias is problematic due to complicated scarring, significant tissue gaps post-surgery, and a higher likelihood of developing post-surgical issues. One common issue that comes after the repair of large inguinal hernias is the development of a scrotal hematoma. This can be problematic to the patient because of the pain and can also be an issue for the healthcare facility because it can lead to a longer stay in the facility and can increase the cost of the healthcare. The use of scrotal drains has been proposed to reduce the risk of scrotal hematomas because of reduced scrotal edema, but is still a topic of debate for scrotal edema. The goal of this paper is to review and research the effect and impact of preventative drainage on scrotal edema and scrotal hematoma. This research will focus on the use of drainage of the scrotal area in patients that have large inguinal hernias. This research will also take into account the patient demographics and history, the details of the procedure, complications that occurred after the procedure, the pain that the patients felt, the time that they stayed in the healthcare facility, and any complications that were associated with the drain. This research will focus on the risk and complications of drainage in large inguinal hernia repair. Placing a drain in the scrotal area can reduce the risk of scrotal hematomas.
