Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of Electrical Muscle Stimulation (EMS) on motor function recovery in the upper and lower limbs of post-stroke patients.

Methodology: A quasi-experimental study was conducted on 40 post-stroke patients aged 35 years and above at Health & Wellness Physio Rehab Center over three months. Patients received EMS therapy in conjunction with conventional physiotherapy five days per week. The Fugl-Meyer Assessment (FMA) and Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) were used to assess motor recovery and spasticity pre- and post-intervention.

Results: Statistically significant improvement was observed in both upper and lower limb motor scores post-treatment (p < 0.05). Spasticity was notably reduced, and functional mobility increased across the study sample.

Conclusion: EMS, when integrated with conventional physiotherapy, enhances neuro-muscular re-education, reduces spasticity, and improves limb functionality in post-stroke patients. These findings support the use of EMS as a safe and effective adjunct in stroke rehabilitation.
