Abstract

Objective: To determine the frequency of Ceftazidime-avibactam (CAZ-AVI) susceptibility in specimens of Carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) at a tertiary care hospital.

Study design: Cross-Sectional Study

Place and duration of study: Department of Microbiology, Combined Military Hospital Multan six months from December to May 2024.

Methodology: Specimens of carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa were included in the study to find the susceptibility of Ceftazidime-avibactam using the standard Kirby Bauer disc diffusion method. Zones were interpreted following clinical standard institute (CLSI) 2023

Results: Out of a total of 103 CRPA specimens, 45.6% (47) were found to be sensitive to CAZ-AVI with an average zone of inhibition of 16.9 ± 8.8 mm. The male population of our study showed more susceptibility to CAZ-AVI as compared to females (55.3% vs. 44.7%). The majority (78.6%) of resistant cases were from inpatient department as compared to the outpatient department 21.4% (p-value <0.001). The majority of the resistant cases belonged to the (60-80) age group. In our study the most sensitivity was shown by BAL and sputum (87.5% and 75% respectively) whereas the most resistant cases were of Tracheal aspirate and blood i.e. 100% both (p-value <0.001).

Conclusion: High susceptibility of Ceftazidime-avibactam against Carbapenem resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa is found in our study.
