Abstract

Background: Sleep quality plays a vital role in student’s cognitive performance, learning ability, and overall academic success. Poor sleep among nursing students has become a growing concern due to academic workload, clinical duties, and stress, which can lead to impaired concentration and decreased academic achievement.

Aim: To determine the relationship between sleep quality and academic performance among undergraduate nursing students at Al-Shahama Institute of Nursing, Peshawar.

Methodology: An analytical cross-sectional study was conducted among 120 undergraduate nursing students selected through convenient sampling. Data were collected using a structured questionnaire based on the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and self-reported Grade Point Average (GPA). Statistical analysis, including Pearson correlation, was performed using SPSS to assess the association between sleep quality and academic performance.

Results: The study revealed that most participants were male (93.3%) and under 25 years of age (74.2%), with many reporting poor sleep qualities. A large portion (67.5%) took over 30 minutes to fall asleep, and most slept only 6–7 hours per night. Academically, 59.1% maintained a GPA above 3.0. A very strong positive correlation (r = 0.968, p = 0.000) was found between total sleep duration and GPA, indicating that better sleep significantly improved academic performance.

Conclusion: The study concludes that good sleep quality is a critical factor influencing academic performance among nursing students. Poor sleep leads to reduced focus, learning ability, and overall academic achievement. Institutions should promote sleep hygiene awareness, stress management, and balanced academic workloads to enhance students’ well-being and academic success.
