Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a metabolic disorder characterized by oxidative stress and hyperglycemia, resulting in hepatorenal complications. For this study, diabetes-induced rats have been used to assess the hypoglycemic activity of the Livistona chinensis leaf extract. Five groups of rats have been randomly selected, which included usual treatment, low-dose extract, high-dose extract, diabetic control, and normal control. Rats have been orally administered the extract following the induction of diabetes through the use of alloxan. The estimation has been carried out for fasting blood glucose, serum glucose, liver functions (ALT, AST, ALP), kidney functions (creatinine, urea, uric acid), and antioxidant enzymes (catalase, superoxide dismutase). There were significant reductions in both fasting and blood glucose in a dose-related manner when the rats were orally administered Livistona chinensis leaf extract. It was also observed that there was a very impressive improvement in the parameters that indicated liver and kidney function, together with increased catalase and superoxide dismutase activity when compared to the diabetic control rats.
