Abstract

Delirium is a temporary mental state that can occur after surgery and anesthesia, causing confusion, altered perception, and difficulty concentrating. It can be caused by various factors, including underlying medical conditions, medications, and surgery-related stress. This study aims to assess the incidence and risk factors of postoperative delirium in the post-anesthesia care unit under general anesthesia in general surgery at Lady Reading Hospital Peshawar. Participants are selected in the study on the basis of simple random sampling technique

Objective: The objectives of this study were to find the incidence and risk factors of post operative delirium in PACU.

Results: In this study, we looked at how often delirium occurs in patients after surgery and anesthesia. We found that about 1 in 4 patients (28%) experienced delirium. The risk of delirium increases with age, with patients aged 56-65 being most likely to experience it (47%). Female patients were also more likely to experience delirium than male patients (52.7% vs 47.3%). Certain medications, such as anticholinergic drugs, opioids, and benzodiazepines, also increased the risk of delirium. Additionally, patients with pre-existing conditions like hypertension, diabetes, and electrolyte imbalance were more likely to experience delirium. Our findings suggest that age, gender, medication use, and pre-existing conditions are all important factors to consider when assessing the risk of delirium in patients after surgery.

Conclusion: Our study concludes that the incidence and risk factors of post operative delirium in post anesthesia care unit is 28.5%. In general study under general anesthesia the risk factors associated with development is advanced age, anticholinergic, Opioids, benzodiazepine, hypertension and electrolyte imbalance. Delirium occurred more in females as compared to males.
