Abstract

Spousal loss represents one of the most profound and life-altering experiences in adulthood, often resulting in significant psychological, emotional, and social challenges. Widowhood not only involves coping with the death of a life partner but also requires individuals to renegotiate identity, social roles, and future life meaning. Despite the extensive literature on bereavement, limited research has explored the lived experiences of widowed women within the cultural and social context of Pakistan. The present study investigates the psychological adjustment processes of widowed women through the lens of major grief theories, including Freud’s psychoanalytic perspective on mourning, Bowlby’s attachment theory, and the Dual Process Model of coping with bereavement.

Using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), this study explores the subjective experiences of widowed women to understand how they interpret and manage the emotional consequences of spousal loss. In-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with widowed participants to capture their personal narratives of grief, coping, and adaptation. The analysis revealed several interconnected themes, including profound emotional distress following loss, the reconstruction of personal identity, struggles with loneliness and social expectations, and the significant role of family, community, and religious coping in facilitating psychological adjustment.

The findings highlight that bereavement in widowhood is not only an emotional experience but also a complex psychological and socio-cultural process shaped by cultural norms, gender roles, and available support systems. The study underscores the importance of culturally sensitive psychological interventions, social support networks, and community awareness to support widowed individuals in navigating the long-term process of grief and adaptation.
