PREVALENCE AND FACTORS OF MUSCULOSKELETAL PAIN IN PREGNANT WOMEN

Abstract

Pregnancy is a unique physiological condition that brings about significant musculoskeletal changes, often resulting in pain and discomfort. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and factors contributing to musculoskeletal pain among pregnant women at DHQ Timergara, Dir Lower, Pakistan. Conducted from August 2021 to Feb 2022, the study surveyed 200 pregnant women attending outpatient check-ups at the Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Orthopedic departments. Using a standardized questionnaire, the study assessed demographic factors, pregnancy-related complications, and pain intensity using the Numeric Pain Rating Scale (NPRS). Results indicated that 60% of participants reported lower back pain, followed by pelvic pain (25%) and joint pain (15%). The majority of pain was mild (50%), with moderate pain reported by 35% of women. Muscle strain (45%) was the most prevalent orthopedic condition, and pain medications were the most common form of treatment (60%). The study highlighted a significant impact of musculoskeletal pain on daily activities, with 35% of participants experiencing mild and 25% moderate disruption. These findings emphasize the need for tailored pain management strategies and interventions for pregnant women to alleviate discomfort and improve quality of life.
