Abstract

Stress is a kind of important risk factor that leads towards the development and progression of major depression among the people. The FKBP5 is an important gene that is important in stress response and Glucocorticoid Receptor (GR) signaling. It is a protein coding gene that belongs to the family of FK-506 protein, acts as co-chaperon which modulates the folding and activity of associated proteins. Keeping in view the importance and significance of FKBP5, I studied the exploration of the relatedness between cancer patients and FKBP5 and evaluated the cortisol level in the serum of cancer patients and compared with control group. Blood samples were taken from cancer patients, which was followed by RNA extraction, cDNA synthesis and then evaluated its expression level. Quantitative PCR (qPCR) and Enzyme Linked Immune Sorbent Assay (ELISA) were then executed for quantification of gene expression and cortisol concentration in serum of patients and control group, respectively. Results indicate that data from gene expression and cortisol concentration comes from population that follows normal probability distribution. Apart from normality, no significance difference was found in FKBP5 expression between cancer patients with respect to gender. In addition, no correlation was observed between FKBP5 expression and cortisol concentration in the cancer patients. Keeping in mind significance and importance of FKBP5, it can be said that its product may be utilized in drug designing process for stress and cancer management.
